Responsibilities

The Charlotte County Corrections Division is responsible for the care, custody and control of all prisoners and arrestees.

General Information

The Charlotte County Jail is a new state-of-the-art Correctional facility designed to hold 528 inmates. The new facility opened its doors for business in February of 2001 and currently has a daily inmate population of approximately 310 inmates. During the course of the 2001 calendar year, the Charlotte County jail booked over 5,000 prisoners.

The new Charlotte County Jail opened with a staff of 82 certified correctional officers and 23 civilian members. In January of 2002 the County Commission approved an additional 25 certified officers and 7 civilian staff for the Jail. The costs associated with these additional 32 staff members will be paid for with the money earned by contracting out 60 beds to the United States Marshal Service to house 60 federal inmates at a current daily per-diem rate of $48.50 per day which will generate over one million dollars a year in revenue for Charlotte County.

The new facility is a Direct Supervision Jail. Direct Supervision is a concept where an officer is directly inside the inmate-housing pod which holds up to 64 inmates. The officer monitors the inmates from inside the pod and is able to control inmate behavior in a more manageable manner. This fairly new concept has been proven to be more effective in controlling inmate behavior.

The Charlotte County Jail also maintains and controls all warrants issued throughout Charlotte County. Currently there are over 5,000 valid Charlotte County warrants on file in the Warrants Division.

The new Jail is maintained for the most part through the use of inmate labor. Prisoners who are classified as minimum risk routinely clean the inside and outside of the facility as well as work in the kitchen preparing and serving over 1,000 meals per day. This has helped alleviate a cost to the Charlotte County taxpayer. It is expected by the summer of 2002, the Charlotte County Jail will have implemented a County Inmate Work Squad to go around the County mowing and cleaning County owned properties, again to offset costs to the taxpayers of Charlotte County.

The Charlotte County Jail incorporates a Transportation Division which is responsible for transporting inmates to and from our Court system as well as picking up inmates housed in other jurisdictions awaiting pickup on Charlotte County charges.
